How can dermatology take action against climate change? Dermatologists to engage more meaningfully on key climate issues and to move beyond discussions of the skin-related impacts of climate change. Dermatologists are professionally charged with diagnosing, treating, researching, and mitigating the health harms from climate change but also must consider that healthcare is among the most carbon-intensive service sectors worldwide. They point out those significant reductions in carbon emissions are readily achieved in dermatology by increased use of telehealth services and virtual medical meetings and residency interviews. Also, dermatologists should prioritize funding for climate-health research to improve healthcare sustainability and decarbonize the profession.

Skin issues can be first sign of rheumatological illnesses

Image
Skin issues can be first sign of rheumatological illnesses Skin conditions may be the first sign that a person has a rheumatic disease that will also affect the joints, muscles or ligaments People should see their doctors if their skin lesions are painful or if they are combined with other symptoms, such as fever,  weight loss , diarrhea or joint swelling.  "If the lesions progressively get worse, patients should try to get in to see their doctor sooner for an evaluation," Photosensitivity can be an early symptom of systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) or dermatomyositis, a rare disease that can cause muscle weakness and skin rashes. Direct sun or ultraviolet light exposure could damage the skin, they said. Sun exposure may produce rashes, including those that are located on the bridge of the nose and cheekbones in those with SLE. Some lesions might look like ringworm with rough, red patches. This can signal subacute cutaneous lupus. Damage, such as...

The Biggest Skincare and Aesthetics Trends for 2023

Image
The Biggest Skincare and Aesthetics Trends for 2023 Back then, skincare fads were really just made-up labels for the same thing. Glass skin, dolphin skin, jelly skin, and glazed donut skin are all terms that, in essence, refer to a complexion that is healthy, balanced, and even in tone. But in 2023, consumers will be wiser, more knowledgeable about the fundamentals, and expect more from cosmetic procedures, goods, and so-called "trends" in the aesthetics industry. As a result, businesses and experts have done the same. Products must do several tasks, and in-office treatments use a 360-degree, holistic strategy that takes into account diet, metabolism, and mental state.

Study finds fewer cases of melanoma among regular users of vitamin D supplements   Fewer cases of  melanoma  were observed among regular users of vitamin D supplements than among non-users, a new study finds. People taking vitamin D supplements regularly also had a considerably lower risk of skin cancer, according to estimates by experienced dermatologists.. Vitamin D plays a key role in the normal function of the human body, and it may also play a role in many diseases. The link between vitamin D and skin cancers has been studied abundantly in the past, but these studies have mainly focused on serum levels of calcidiol, which is a metabolite of vitamin D, and its association with skin cancers. Findings from these studies have been inconclusive and even contradictory at times, as serum calcidiol levels have been associated with both a slightly higher and with a slightly lower risk of different skin cancers. This may, in part, be explained by the fact that serum calcidio...

Extreme weather events have a significant negative impact on skin disease   The skin is a large, complex organ, and it serves as the body's primary interface with the environment, playing key roles in sensory, thermoregulatory, barrier, and immunological functioning. As floods, wildfires, and extreme heat events increase in frequency and severity, they pose a significant threat to global dermatological health, as many  skin diseases  are climate sensitive "We wanted to provide dermatologists and other practitioners with a comprehensive overview of extreme weather-related skin disease as a foundation for patient education, implementation of early treatment interventions, and improved disease outcomes Flooding, one of the most common natural disasters, is linked to traumatic wounds and bacterial and fungal infections of the skin. Contact dermatitis is another common consequence of flooding since flood water is often contaminated with pesticides, sewage, ferti...

Psoriasis patients who meditate may ease symptoms, improve quality of life   Erin Bartholomew, from University of California, San Francisco, and colleagues conducted a systematic literature review to assess the role of mindfulness and meditation in treating psoriasis symptoms, severity, and quality of life. Based on six identified randomized controlled trials with a pooled 356 patients with psoriasis, the researchers found that five demonstrated improvement in the self-administered Psoriasis Area and Severity Index after eight or 12 weeks of guided meditation. Mental health benefits were seen among psoriasis patients following guided meditation in one randomized controlled trial and one nonrandomized trial. "Overall, these results suggest the possibility that meditation can be used as a tool to improve both psoriasis severity and patient quality of life in the short term," the authors write.

The Role of Vitamins and Supplements on Skin Appearance As the largest and most exposed organ in the body, the skin experiences trauma from both extrinsic and intrinsic aging factors, resulting in loss of elasticity, increased laxity, wrinkling, and rough-textured appearance.  Chronologically aged skin appears dry, thin, and finely wrinkled; photoaged skin appears leathery with coarse wrinkles and uneven pigmentation. In recent years, numerous systemic nutrients have been proposed to improve skin appearance. ·          Multiple vitamins and supplements have demonstrated evidence in improving skin appearance. ·    Carotenoids, along with vitamins C and E, have been shown to protect skin from UV-induced photodamage, while supplements containing collagen decrease the appearance of wrinkles .
